The Audubon Abbeville Press Limited Edition Prints

Plate 37 Golden-Winged Woodpecker or "Flicker" from Birds of America by John James Audubon

The Audubon Abbeville Press Limited Edition of John James Audubon’s “Birds of America” series represents only the second full reproduction of the entire set of images issued in the original publication.  Issued in 1985 in coordination with the National Audubon Society, the set was issued to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Audubon’s birth.  The set was limited to a low 350 full sets, 300 bound and only 50 sold as loose sets. Like the Amsterdam Limited Edition, these sets were sold out and prints from this series can only be acquired through the secondary market.  Also, these sets were printed in the same double elephant folio size as the Havell originals, measuring 26 ½ by 39 ½.  Printed using the best technology available at the time, the prints were created using a 13 color offset lithography process.  The paper by the Mohawk Paper Co. of New York is coated 100% acid free and is slightly off-white and smooth in character contrasting to the rough, toned, rag paper utilized in the Amsterdam prints. Along the edge of the paper a watermark bears the depiction “Audubon Society – Abbeville Press” pictured above. In comparison to the Amsterdam edition, the images of Abbeville edition are rendered crisp with fine sharp lines.  The colors are cleaner and display greater contrast due to the qualities of the white paper base. In summary, collectors have many reasons to seek the Abbeville Press edition,
  • Low limited issue of 350 sets.
  • All sets have been sold and can only be acquired in secondary markets.
  • Second and last to date, modern reproduction to complete all plates from original Havell publication.
  • High image quality.
  • High material quality.
The Abbeville Press Limited Edition is a set that truly exemplifies its attractiveness to art appreciators as well as to collectors alike.
